Nick noticed Strachan leaving the party, as ordered in advance. He hoped the boy would be successful in making a capture, was certain he would burn the merchantman if he could not take her. Either result would damage the French equally, though the first was the more desirable. He knew from experience that Mauritius Indiamen were rich prizes.

McKay’s whisper disturbed his contemplation of Strachan.

“Both frigates tied up still. No change, sir.”

Nick had thought that was what he had seen. He knew McKay’s distance vision was better than his. He had hoped McKay was not aware of that particular fact. Not to worry! His servant and friend, the Scotsman would keep his mouth firm closed.

“Ready all!”

No response, as was right when they were trying for surprise.

“Fast now!”

The oarsmen heaved their hardest, exhausting themselves. They would remain in the boats, ready to take the attackers off if they were defeated, coming aboard only to assist in sailing the taken prize out.

Against the side, grapnels thrown and heaved tight, bellowing as they raced up onto the deck, into the wild brawl…
